Frequently Asked Questions

How many trees are planted per Hectare?

The Guatemala Government requires an initial plant of 1111 seedlings per hectare with 222 seedlings reserved to replace failed seedlings in the years following the initial plant.

What does it cost per hectare to reforest in Guatemala ?

When we include all the phases of silviculture such as seed acquisition, growing, transporting, planting, tending of seedlings (which in some cases is for 5 years), and administration the costs can often exceed $1000 per hectare.

What species are planted?

Tree species are coniferous primarily and the choices are made based on the use of local seed sources. In The Reservation of Biosphere of Sierra of the Mines tree species are dictated largely by the elevationl and aspect.

On lower slopes, for instance below 1000 meters above sea level, hardwood and softwood species such as the following might be planted:

Laurel - Cordia Aliodora (Spanish Elm, Ecudorelaurel, Salmwood)
Cedro - Cediella Odorata (Spanish Cedar, Mexican Cedar, Cigar Box Cedar)
San Juan - Vochysia Guatemalenis (no common name)
Canxan - Terminalia Amazonia (White Olive, Nargusta)
San Maria - Calophyllum Brasiliensis (Jacareuba)
Palo Blanco - Cybistax Donnell Smithii (Hackberry)
Caoba - Swistenia Macrophyla (Pacific Coast Mahogany)

On upper slopes we might be planting Pine and Cypress seedlings.  Pinus Oocarpa is suitable for elevations between 1500 ft. (460m) to 4000 ft. (1220m) elevation.  The Cypress, Cupressus Lusitancia, is good for any elevation and is resistant to Pine Beetle attacks.  It will be inter-planted with the Pine.
